Fishwick left school at age 16 without qualifications and initially worked as an apprentice builder. He disliked the building trade and started buying and selling used cars at night. By 1994, he had established his own garage focused on vans and minibuses.
Today, his company David Fishwick Van and Minibus Sales is the largest supplier of minibuses in Britain. Based in Colne, Lancashire, it customizes affordable vehicles for schools, sports teams, and other groups. The company has expanded across Europe with a multi-million pound annual turnover.
After witnessing small businesses struggle to get loans following the 2008 financial crisis, Fishwick founded his own small bank to serve them. The business was the focus of Channel 4's 2012 observational documentary series "Bank of Dave."
Fishwick aimed to operate the bank ethically without taking a large salary and donate profits to charity. However, regulatory hurdles from the Financial Services Authority eventually forced him to close it.
In addition to his minibus company, Fishwick owns commercial property and vehicle parts businesses. He is an avid pilot certified to fly planes and helicopters. Fishwick sponsors several local sports teams and causes in Lancashire.
In 2014, he published an autobiography entitled "Bank of Dave" that appeared on the Sunday Times best sellers list.
